MDP's basic industries team focuses on investment opportunities in a wide range of cyclical and non-cyclical industrial sectors, including paper, packaging, forest products, industrial minerals, construction materials, building products, metals and mining, chemicals, other natural resources companies, and general manufacturing industries. The team invests in a broad range of companies where strong operating cash flow or business portfolio repositioning permits the creation of equity value through the reduction of acquisition indebtedness.

MDP believes that basic industries properties often represent attractive investment opportunities because of several favorable attributes:

• Entry barriers emanating from a dominant reserve and/or resource position in the raw material;
• Entry barriers arising from large capital requirements;
• Entry barriers limiting competition through non-market factors such as environmental and permitting restrictions;
• An ability to hedge commodity prices and thereby benefit from resulting leverage
• Favorable industry or demographic trends; and
• Stable, experienced management teams with long tenure at their companies.

MDP's basic industries team has significant experience investing in basic industrial, natural resource, and commodity-based companies.
